USU Center for Women and Gender Receives Emerging Center Award

Thursday, Mar. 28, 2013

USU's Ann Austin receiving the 2013 Trailblazer Award
Utah State University's Ann Austin was named a 2013 Trailblazer by the National Council for Research on Women. USU’s Center for Women and Gender was honored with an Emerging Center Award.

The Center for Women and Gender at Utah State University, in its third year of operation, has been recognized as the recipient of the 2013 Emerging Center Award from the NCRW (National Council for Research on Women).

“We are truly honored with this recognition we have received,” said Ann Austin, director of the Center for Women and Gender. “We are proud to be associated with the NCRW and its mission. Our center is not quite three years old, but during that time we have worked hard as a team and have had a lot of support from the community and the campus. We are delighted that those efforts are being recognized on such a grand scale.”

When Austin traveled to New York City to accept the award, she was surprised when NRCW honored her, too. She was named a 2013 Trailblazer. This honor is given to women who have made a difference in other women’s lives and helped build a more equitable and just world.

In addition to her role at the center, Austin is a professor in the Family, Consumer and Human Development Department at USU. Much of her research has centered on fostering healthy child development. She is the Center for Women and Gender’s founding director.

The Emerging Center Award recognizes a member center that was established, joined NCRW as a member center or experienced a significant change in mission or growth within the last five years. Accomplishments may include programs or products that have had significant impact on the lives of women and/or girls, innovative funding strategies, effective mentoring, its impact on the community or new leadership directions.

The Utah State University Center for Women and Gender is an academic entity that creates a professional and social climate focused on enhancing opportunities for women and men. The CWG has a strong social justice mission, and all students, faculty and advocates who are interested in exploring and addressing the challenges of intersectionalities (gender and ethnicity; gender and culture, gender and religion, etc.) will find an intellectual home with the CWG.
