About Natural Connections
Join the USU Outdoor Recreation Program for the first ever Natural Connections course. Enhance your Connections experience by spending five days in the Mount Naomi Wilderness less than an hour from campus. Trip orientation takes place August 14, followed by backpacking from August 15 to 19, and a return to campus in time to join a special section of USU 1010 that begins on August 20. Natural Connections costs an additional $210, which includes the first night's lodging on campus, a backpack, camp stove, sleeping bag, meals and a headlamp that is yours to keep.
Applications are due June 30th, so get them in soon.
Who can join?
The Natural Connections course is for incoming freshmen only. All students who enroll in Natural Connections will be enrolled in a special section of USU 1010 to complete upon their return from their trip.
How to apply?
Students must apply to participate in this course; only 30 will be selected to attend. Applicants must fill out the form (link located to the right) to be considered for the course. Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications are due June 30, 2014. Selected applicants will be informed via email and supplied a link to pay for the course the first week of July. Applicants must submit a one paragraph statement about what the outdoors means to them in order to be considered.
What will you do?
Participants will spend five days in the Mount Naomi Wilderness exploring Cache Valley's amazing backcountry with the ORP's outdoor experts, and gaining valuable insights about the geology and ecology of the area alongside naturalists from Stokes Nature Center. Learn about the formal process of observing and recording the details of nature, and get acquainted with your new environment through this brand new Connections course.
What you will need?
Attendees will need to bring these items:
• Clothing suitable for the outdoors
• Hiking boots
• 3-5 pairs of socks
• Sunscreen and a hat
• Rain gear
What we will provide
The Outdoor Recreation Program will provide rentals of a backpack, camp stove, tent, sleeping bag, meals in the field and a headlamp that is yours to keep. For the orientation day, on August 14, 2014, we will provide lodging on campus. Students will be back in time for the remainder of their Connections courses.
Your $210 fee covers all of the costs associated with the course.
